Web App Design & Development

Created 15+ web applications. For all, I was the lead designer, lead developer, lead tester, and user support.

Define and Enforce Sourcecode Versioning

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Define and enforce a new process for securing and versioning all sourcecode for web apps, websites, scripts, etc.

Why?

  • Previously, there was no standard process for developers to back up and version control their code, including Oracle stored procedures (PL/SQL). This process needed to be standardized to protect our sourcecode, to track changes with notes on what was changed and why, to allow development to scale beyond a single developer, and to conform to industry standards.

My Role

  • Define
  • Enforce Use
  • Perform annual audits to ensure that no sensitive data is stored in repos. If found, it was removed and scrubbed from commit history

Define and Enforce Documentation Standards

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Define and enforce a standard way of documenting sourcecode in code comments, and for creating readme files, etc., for code in repos

Why?

  • Before there was no practice for adding code comments, so maintaining code was difficult plus it didn't scale to multiple developers. Defining and enforcing this allowed code to be simpler to maintain and easier for another developer to contribute

My Role

  • Define
  • Enforce Use

Create and Audit Results of QUALYS Vulnerability Scans for Linux Servers and Web Apps

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Create and implement a process for performing vulnerability scans on all Linux servers and the web apps running on them. Should any vulnerability be found, I would either patch it myself or delegate it to another developer to perform.

Why?

  • We had no process in place for testing how vulnerable our systems were. Main campus depended on units to do this themselves, and we were not before me. This was vital to protect our systems and our data, and we went from zero scans to weekly scans.

My Role

  • Define
  • Create
  • Manage
  • Perform and/or delegate patching

Create Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Management System

What? Why? My Role

Why?

  • To standardize who is authorized to work with radioisotopes and related machines.

My Role

  • Architect
  • Co-product manager
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Create Serious Injury Transmittal

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Create a notification system for serious injuries on campus. Would send a secure email to secure mailman mailing list, and post a generic notification to a Slack channel as a backup notification system to tell people to check their email for more information.

Why?

  • People weren't always checking their emails timely enough, so this extra nudge got people to check ASAP.

My Role

  • Architect
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Create Surplus Chemicals Inventory

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Create an inventory system to help facilitate easy sharing of excess chemicals to labs on campus.

Why?

  • The discovery process of what was available needed to be simple for users.

Create Scrape Taleo Jobs for Department Site

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Jobs for the department were added to the main Taleo system used by campus, but staff forgot to update the department website to reflect these. There was no API access available, so I created a simple scraper to retrieve and cache this info from the central jobs site.

Why?

  • Staff were forgetting to post job openings to the departments site, and there was a business need to show them there.

My Role

  • Architect
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Migrate Department Site From Drupal to Wordpress

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Migrate the department website to WordPress, maintaining all URLs, content, and custom bookmarking.

My Role

  • Project manager
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Create Waste Pickup Reconciliation System for Waste Techs

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Create a system that allowed waste techs to be able to mark waste inventory as picked up in the main chemical waste inventory database.

Why?

  • There was a business decision to create a waste pickup reconcilliation system that was seperate from the main waste pickup request system, and this was that system.

My Role

  • Project manager
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Create Secure SMTP Microservice

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Create a system to allow secure emails to be sent from a central service that multiple applications could share, and allow for logging that was not available to the department. This was deployed in a Docker container to help with evaluating Docker for use with bespoke systems.

Why?

  • There was a central SMTP server, but logs were unavailable to departments. There was a business need to have more oversight here for logging and debugging sent messages. This microservice was a front-end to the main SMTP server on campus.

My Role

  • Project manager
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Maintain and Enhance Java-Based API

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Patch and enhance java-based API used by all bespoke systems.

Why?

  • Centralized data access allowed for authorization and authentication for data access to be standardized for all internal systems, as well as reduced friction for app development

My Role

  • Project manager
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Create Load Testing Process

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Create a process and system that could be used to load test bespoke systems. This system was run from AWS and consisted of zero - many EC2 instances that would do the hammering. A script would launch the instances (how many was configuratble), monitor testing, and shut down the EC2 instances afterwords to prevent huge billing spikes from having 100+ new EC2 instances that weren't actually used after testing was complete.

Why?

  • No system or process was in place to do load testing. Rather than invest in a 3rd party solution, the business decision was to create something of our own.

My Role

  • Project manager
  • Architect
  • Lead designer
  • Lead developer

Oversee Creation and Launch of Dept Data Warehouse

What? Why? My Role

What?

  • Oversee the creation of a data warehouse from inception to production

Why?

  • The department had no data warehouse in place, and large queries were slowing down production systems. This was created to move the load of reporting off of production system and to a new database instance, as well as to be a central repository for all things that business needed to report on but were not directly part of a production web application

My Role

  • Project manager

Empathy & Leadership

Empathy is the cornerstone of a healthy and productive workplace. I've seen firsthand how taking the time to truly listen and understand a colleague's perspective can turn challenges into opportunities for growth and collaboration. I've also witnessed the impact on morale when empathy is lacking–it can make even small obstacles feel insurmountable.

Empathy isn't just about solving problems; it's about showing that you value and respect others' experiences, which builds trust and strengthens relationships. Throughout my career, whether mentoring a junior developer or navigating complex projects with cross-functional teams, empathy has always been my guiding principle. It creates an environment where people feel heard, supported, and motivated to do their best work–and that's when truly great things happen.
